The department of Research Instrumentation and Informatic of ME AFKI (University of Miskolc, Research Institute Of Applied Earth Sciences) was founded in 1984 in order to develop and make experimental productions and measuring devices which were needed to complete the research tasks continued in the Institute.

Hardware and software systems connected to the researches have gained greater ground in the work of the department. Using up the research and development experiences, the technical development tasks in connection with industrial process control as well as designing and making information systems turned up in the work of the Department.

Some employees of the Department work also for the University of Miskolc as lecturers. A few of the university students do their work connected to their diploma thesis at the Department every year, and many of them have some kind of part time job here in summers. Thanks to the foreign connections of the University, two or three students of foreign universities do their diploma work at the Department year by year.

Since 1995, the Department has organized DCS Distributed Control Systems Meeting every year.
